Seriously, January has been such an awesome month for youth ministry. I’m excited and pleased and I don’t quite know how to communicate it to you! I just want you to know that I think we’ve had a great month, and something about starting off the year with a great month has me excited about what 2020 could be.
I am not saying that 2020 is going to be a year in which great prosperous things happen for our youth ministry or each of us personally. Rather, I think what I am trying to say is that 2020 is going to be a year in which we rejoice in God together, increasingly so. This thought brings me joy. This is also why I believe that January was great.
We had three Youth Worship Sundays, three Sunday school meetings, and we will have had 4 Wednesday night Small Group meetings. Not to mention the fact that we just got back from the Rock the Universe High School Retreat. In those experiences, I have felt that we have grown a little closer to the students, and new students have found our group to be a place they want to belong.
The reason for this, is that we are prioritizing relational warmth to share the Gospel in our ministry. Our leaders are spending time getting to know the kids in their small groups and it is showing. Last week the high school girls small group met outside of youth for some coffee and talked about life and faith together. This kind of interaction is exactly the way we wanted to come alongside you in your ministry to your children. We want the kids to see that they have a network of people that care about them.
Rock the Universe weekend went similarly. We rented a house in Orlando for the high schoolers and leaders. We then spent the weekend having quality time, playing games, and enjoying conversations with the kids. Monty woke up early with the boys and worked out with them at the fitness center. Rachel, Jennifer, and Lynn organized a game of “What Do You Meme,” that lasted well into the night and resulted in laughter that echoed throughout the house. The kids and leaders gathered after a long day at Universal to sing and celebrate with Lynn for her birthday. These personal touches are so important for the students as they learn to embrace the support system forming around them. We are looking forward to the next opportunity to spend time together!
Let’s take a look at February as we continue on in our goal of making these strong personal connections with your children and with you.
