As you minister to your students each week, it’s important to remember that each student has at least one parent representing him or her. Whether you lead a small group, teach Bible study, or take students on special events or trips, you are also interacting with parents.
Make sure you schedule your time with students in a way that maintains a family-friendly environment. Here are a few ideas to keep in mind when it comes to respecting parents’ time.
• If for any reason you won’t return on time from an event, allow students to call home as soon as you know you’ll be late.
• Schedule your time with students. Whether it’s Bible study or a fun night out together, take a few moments before you meet with your students to plan your time. Be sure to communicate that information with parents. Here’s a lesson I’ve learned: Uninformed parents are not happy parents.
• Leave a little time at the end of your group or event for talking and hanging out; when it’s a scheduled part of the time, you don’t have to push teenagers out the door.
• Take your students to the meeting spot where parents will pick them up, and hang out there for a few minutes. is will make your good intentions clear to parents and give you an opportunity to talk with them.
• It’s better for you to be waiting on parents than for parents to be waiting on you.
Well, as odd as this may sound, I’ve learned that it’s better to stop and help protect the families in your ministry than to spend 15 minutes more in your group time
By respecting parents’ time, you’ll encourage them, build stronger relationships with them, and strengthen their family.
