Good Intentions.
We all have them. Last month I talked about New Year's Resolutions - changes that we are making to get the year started right. Eat healthier, work out more (or just work out period), be more disciplined with devotions, spend more time with our family, be more productive at work. So, how are you doing? Staying strong?
At the beginning of the year, I joined an online community called the "Youth Pastor Diet" - great prizes for the winner who lost the biggest percentage of weight. $500 for the winner, $300 for second place, $100 for third place. And for every pound lost, your name got entered in for the grand prize drawing of one of two all-expense paid trip to Hawaii for you and your spouse WITH $3500 of spending money! Those are great motivators! Add to that I love my wife and family and want to be around to take care of and love them for many years to come, I knew it was time to make a change.
Fast forward to last Thursday. In one day, I ate an entire family pack of Oreos. First of all, Oreos aren't just milk's favorite cookie - they are EVERYONE'S favorite cookie. They are so delicious! Just a quick dip in a glass of cold milk, pop the whole thing in your mouth - mmmmm! Is there anything better?
Yes. $500. Trips to Hawaii. Living to see my kids get older. What is it about us that many times we will make choices that completely do not match up to our list of priorities? Is any cookie that good? Honestly - no. So then, what should I do? Just give up and get another pack of Oreos? No. I just start over. I try a little harder. Because eating healthy and exercise is still the right thing and eating an entire pack of Oreos is the wrong thing.
So it is in our walk with the Lord. We make mistakes. We fail. But we don't give up. We just start over. We try again. And the Lord, in His unconditional love, gives unlimited "do-overs." His love and grace are eternal and He never gives up on us. Keep going. He is on your side and will help you!
So, put that pack of Oreos down and get going!
