It’s hard to believe that once again I am down to a deadline. Not that I would procrastinate, I just sometimes wait until the last possible moment. It is so simple to say that I will get to it in a few moments or first thing in the morning I will get that taken care of. I have a bad habit of putting off the things on my ‘to do’ list until the last possible time that I can get by with it and still get the job done. I do have good intentions but they don’t get you very far. Someone once said, “Many have the right aims in life but they just never get around to pulling the trigger.” I hope that this is not the case with you. I found this little poem by Gloria Ptizer that says, ‘Procrastination is my sin, it brings me naught but sorrow. I know that I should stop it, in fact I will… tomorrow.’
Procrastination is a real problem that we need to be concerned with and find a way to change. There are some things that we can put off and it really doesn’t make that much difference, but on the other hand there are some things we must take care of before it is too late. Often times a relationship with Jesus is the thing that we put off more than any other. We tell others and ourselves that someday we are going to give our lives to Him. I read a bumper sticker the other day that said, “Many are waiting until the 11th hour to give their heart to Jesus but then they die at 10:30.” That is just the problem, we don’t know how long we have to wait, and James reminds us of this: Now listen, you who say, “Today or tomorrow we will go to this or that city, spend a year there, carry on business and make money.” Why, you do not even know what will happen tomorrow. What is your life? You are a mist that appears for a little while and then vanishes. (James 4:13, 14)
There is nothing more important in this world than to get your life right with God; and this is done by coming to Jesus in submission, and giving Him control of your life, giving Him first priority in everything. You may say I just don’t have time right now; I have too many things going on, the kids want to do this or do that; one-day things will slow down. Let me urge you to not put Christ in second place, don’t wait another to day to begin serving Him, today is the day! John 9:4 says: As long as it is day, we must do the work of him who sent me. Night is coming, when no one can work.
What are you doing for Jesus and what have you been putting off? Together lets work while His light is shining!
Because we’re His;
