Hello amazing parents of Ustick Baptist students,
The weather is getting warmer, flowers are on display, and I haven't wore a coat in weeks. I am so excited to be entering into my favorite time of year, summer! I know it's still spring, and I like spring, too. But I get excited for summer for a lot of reasons. For one, I just don't like the cold, warmth is my preference. Second, I like that it seems like students are a little less stressed during the summer months. They do not have the daily pressures of waking up as early, studying, performing on tests, and excelling at their extra programs. As a ministry, we want to capitalize on this. When we are less pre-occupied, we have an opportunity to give more attention to growing in our faith, and hopefully that will have a ripple effect that lasts all year and continues to snowball. Third reason for being thrilled about summer: I like the things that we can do in summer that we can't do any other time. Things like summer camp, mission trips, and being around water. Ecclesiastes 3:1 says, "There is a time for everything, and a season for every activity under the heavens." Each season has its pros and cons, but I want to make sure we take advantage of all that is available at each moment.
A few things to highlight as we enter May: Transitions. It's the time of year where we begin to welcome new 6th graders into the youth ministry. I know this can seem intimidating for those graduating 5th graders and for their parents as well. I assure you, it's not as scary as it seems. We are blessed with so many kind students, I'm sure they will enjoy being in the youth group right away. To help with this, incoming 6th graders are encouraged to join us on May 19th for a welcoming event for junior highers only. Also, they can jump into the wiffleball match on May 5th, too.
Seniors are graduating and we will miss them thoroughly! On June 5th we'll have our Hawaiian Luau, which serves as a celebration of our graduating students. As always, seniors can stick around through the summer, and can take advantage of having one last summer camp. Come September, they're still loved, but not admitted to youth group anymore.
One other May highlight, for me anyways, is I get to take a vacation with my amazing wife. We'll head to the Bay Area in California and then crash at Yosemite National Park for some camping. We'll be gone the 9th through the 18th, but the youth ministry will continue thanks to our awesome volunteer team.
God bless,
Pastor John
