February was such an amazing month in Granger Student Ministries (GSM)! 116 students took a step to join one of the three summer mission teams, 115 high school students attended the winter retreat and over 125 parents came to the Jim Burns seminar on teaching your children healthy sexuality! There is no way to unpack and share ALL the amazing stories inside those stats, but reading through the mission trip applications and winter retreat response cards I can tell you that there are scores of students who are taking their next steps toward Jesus!
As mentioned in the February newsletter and also in a parent letter that should have arrived via "snail mail", both GSM middle school and high school will be having a teaching series in March on the topic of sex. If you didn't see that parent letter you can view it here. The letter outlines more specifically what we will and will not be covering during our planned talks and group time. We do anticipate that students may have questions that come up that may not fit in the scheduled topics so we've had two group leader trainings over the last month to help prepare small group leaders for those conversations. Our goal is not to necessarily answer every question that a student asks but rather to respond with truth and grace and help students wrestle with their questions through the lens of Scripture so that they can begin making Biblical decisions.
I realize most students have had "the talk" by the time they are in GSM and you may not feel the need to revisit this conversation but I would encourage you to make a little space each week to ask your students about what was talked about at GSM. Inside the parent letter is the week-to-week guide for both middle school and high school. Yes it may be a little awkward, but all research points to the benefit of students having ongoing healthy conversations with their parents.
If you have any questions or concerns (related to this series or anything else GSM-related) please don't hesitate to let me know by emailing me at [email protected]. The GSM staff and volunteers are with you and for you as you parent your students!
